Speaker Bio Anne Huriwai
Anne Huriwai is from a small place in New Zealand based on the East Coast of the North Island called Rangitukia.
Anne has 30 years of experience working at a whanau (family) & hapu (sub-tribe) level and 23 years of experience working in the field of Iwi (tribal) lead health, education, housing and social services.
She is the Senior Manager with Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou which is the mandated tribal authority for the tribe of Ngati Porou, where she manages a diverse range of social services through contractual arrangements with several government agencies including Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry for Children, Te Puni Kokiri – Ministry for Maori Development, Ministry of Justice, NZ Police and the Department of Corrections.
In 2013, under Anne’s delegated leadership, they began in earnest a process to stem the flow of Ngati Porou children in to State Care and repatriate them with their whanau and hapu.
To this end, in 2013 they signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Child Youth & Family (a service of the Ministry of Social Development) to formalise their commitment to work together.
